The Women's Home

The mission of The Women's Home is to help women in crisis regain their self-esteem and dignity, empowering them to return to society as productive, self-sufficient individuals. The Women’s Home is a multi-ethnic, non-denominational, non-profit United Way agency.

Within the Life Learning Center, The Home’s clients participate in comprehensive clinical, vocational and chemical dependency programs. They also receive job training in the on-campus Cottage Thrift Shop and administrative offices. Years of research, professional collaboration and evidence-based practice are enabling The Women’s Home to become a nationally recognized model of excellence in residential rehabilitation.

The Zonta Club of Houston has been recognized by the Women's Home as a valued volunteer group. Club members provide seminars on mock interviews, communication skills, team building, time management, organizational skills, managing personal change, financial education, and other related topics.  We also host one of their awards banquets to honor the achievements of the women and celebrate their successes in meeting various tasks and learning challenges.

The Zonta Club of Houston has been associated with The Women's Home since 2002.

United Against Human Trafficking (UAHT)

United Against Human Trafficking (UAHT) exists to end human trafficking through awareness, education and outreach. Founded as a volunteer coalition in 2005, in an effort to respond to the increasing concern about human trafficking in the Greater Houston Area (GHA), UAHT is now viewed as a leader in the local and national anti-trafficking movement. As an agency, they have thrived in developing and delivering professional training & technical assistance programs, public awareness initiatives and prevention education curriculum for youth. UAHT takes a comprehensive approach in providing anti-trafficking programming by addressing a multitude of victim profiles (persons who may be targeted), e.g. U.S. citizens/legal permanent residents and foreign national individuals, males, females and young adults - encompassing both sex and labor trafficking.  A community unifier, UAHT serves as the lead agency of the Houston Rescue & Restore Coalition (HRRC), which is made up of 35 members from the Houston area. HRRC’s mission is to bring organizations and individuals together to strategically organize anti-human trafficking efforts. The coalition has existed since 2005 and a committee structure was formed in 2016 to increase member collaboration, revise and create the foundation for future sustainability.

Zonta International adopted the fight against human trafficking as one of its international service projects a number of years ago.  In the United States we tend to think of the problem as existing in other countries.  We have discovered that the US is principally a transit and destination country for trafficking in persons. Interstate 10 is a major corridor for this egregious activity.  Thus the Zonta Club of Houston endorses the work of the UAHT in fighting this problem and helping the victims restore their lives.  ZCH is a member of the HRRC Coalition as well.  We have assisted UAHT by providing laptop computers, funding a Spanish language brochure to reach potential victims, funding their Youth Prevention Programs, and the current Super Bowl 2017 efforts.

The Zonta Club of Houston has been associated with United Against Human Trafficking since 2005.  The National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) is a national, toll-free hotline, 1-888-373-7888available to answer calls from anywhere in the country, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year.

Girls on the Run, Greater Houston

The Zonta Club of Houston selected GOTR-Greater Houston as a Service Project in June 2018.  GOTR inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident.  GOTR uses a fun, experienced-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.  Girls on the Run International was established in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina by Molly Barker.  What started with thirteen girls in one school has grown to over 200 councils in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. With the help of almost 100,000 volunteers, Girls on the Run served nearly 180,000 girls in 2015, including our millionth girl! Girls on the Run continues to grow and currently hosts more than 350 end-of-season 5K events across the United States, making the Girls on the Run 5K series the largest in the country. Girls on the Run has also expanded to include middle school girls through Heart & Sole, a program dedicated to the unique needs of adolescent girls.
